Rotwandhaus from Rotwand summit

Hike to Rotwand summit in Bavaria

⛰️🌼🥾 Hiking to Rotwand summit (1,884 m) in Bavaria with an overnight stay at the mountain cabin @rotwandhaus_est1907

💡 For the sake of variety I recommend choosing a different hiking trail for the descent than for the ascent. Perfect when traveling by public transportation, then you don’t need to return to the same place 👌
We experienced all types of weather conditions in these 2 days 😅☀️🌬️☁️

Tour summary:

↗️ From the train station of Geitau via lake Soinsee to Rotwandhaus and further to Rotwand summit
↘️ From Rotwandhaus via Taubenstein / Taubensteinbahn to lake Spitzingsee

Tour Details:

↗️ Ascent:
We took the BRB train from Munich to Bayrischzell and got off at Geitau (1 hour 19 min) from where hiked via lake Soinsee to the mountain cabin Rotwandhaus at 1,737 m (~3 hours for ~1,000 m up in altitude with a distance of ~11 km). From there, we hiked another ~20 min up to Rotwand summit at 1,884 m (~150 m up in altitude with a distance of ~2.5 km) and then the same way down again back to Rotwandhaus. While you should be capable of overcoming around 1,000 m in altitude, the hike is not really difficult.

🏠 @rotwandhaus_est1907 where we spent the night is a nice mountain hut with a large sun terrace offering one of the best ‘Kaiserschmarrn’ (traditional Austrian dish) I know 😋

↘️ Descent:
We chose a different hiking trail for our way back – via Taubenstein / Taubensteinbahn to lake Spitzingsee. The hike ended at the valley station of Taubensteinbahn (~2.5 hours for ~160 m up and ~900 m down in altitude with a distance of ~8.5 km). On your way you’ll pass Taubenstein which is worth a detour on a clear day. From there you could also take the cable car (Taubensteinbahn) down to lake Spitzingsee, but we walked. The hike is not difficult, but can be slippery when wet and muddy, so be careful when it rained!
From lake Spitzingsee we took the bus to lake Schliersee where we stayed for cake and some drinks with a beautiful view of the lake and eventually took the same train back to Munich.
